Scientists Discover Links Between Hair Loss and Genetics
Scientists from the University of Bonn recently discovered a gene
that is responsible for a hereditary form of hair loss known as
Hypotrichosis simplex. The research is the first-ever to identify a
specific receptor that is essential for hair growth. The researchers
said that their findings will lead to new breakthroughs that could
resolve the problem of hair loss.
“Although Hypotrichosis simplex is very uncommon, it may prove critical in understanding the mechanisms of hair growth,” says project leader Dr. Regina Betz from Bonn’s Institute of Human Genetics. Individuals affected by this condition usually go bald during childhood. Alopecia or the process of hair loss especially around the scalp progresses as an individual gets older.
As examined in the project, the researchers found out that the cause of Hypotrichosis simplex is genetic abnormality that restricts certain receptor structures on the surface of hair follicle cells from forming properly. These receptors play an essential role in hair growth that was previously unknown to scientists.
Dr. Markus N?then, chairman of Genetic Medicine at Bonn University’s Life & Brain Centre said that the defective receptor structure falls into the category of what are known as G-protein-coupled receptors. This is good news, because, they are particularly well suited as points of impact for drug treatments, he said. The researchers were also able to pinpoint an endogenous messenger that attaches in the hair follicle to the receptor.
Researchers believe that the study opens up opportunities for future studies about hair loss. “We can now search selectively for related substances that may be used in therapies for hair loss,” say Dr. Ivar von Kgelgen of Bonns Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Because of the study, the possibility of developing medicines that will benefit patients suffering from hair loss has significantly improved.

The inner sheath runs next to the hair shaft and ends at the oil (sebaceous) gland. The outer sheath runs to the gland and ends at the erector pili muscle. This is the muscle that causes our hair to “stand on end” when it contracts.
The hair shaft is comprised of three layers of dead protein cells called keratin. The innermost layer, known as the medulla, is not always present in every hair shaft. The second layer, known as the cortex, provides the bulk of the hair shaft. The hair color is mostly determined by the pigmentation contained in this layer. The outermost layer is called the cuticle. It is comprised of a series of overlapping cells. The hair’s luster and sheen comes from the cuticle.
How Hair Grows
Scalp hair grows at an average rate of six inches per year, or only .3-.4 mm per day. There are three distinct stages of hair growth.
– Catagen Phase
This transitional phase runs about two to three weeks. At any given time approximately 3% of your hair is in this phase. There is no hair growth during this period while the out portion of the hair root sheath shrinks and attaches itself to the root.
– Telogen Phase
This phase, known as the “resting period” is experienced by approximately 15% of your hair. Telogen lasts for around 100 days for scalp hair and significantly longer for other body hair.

This phase defines a period of activity where the hair cells are dividing and new hair growth occurs. This phase can last for as long as two to six years. Shorter growth periods are indicative of people who have trouble growing their hair long.

Female Hair Loss : A Serious Problem
By some figures, 50 of cases, the cause of hair loss in women is due to androgenic alopecia, or female pattern baldness.
What is Female Hair Loss?
Female hair loss is a genetic condition inherited from either parent. The genetically pretentious hair follicles in women experiencing female hair loss are susceptible to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which causes the hair follicle to shed the normal hair and produce thinner, shorter, colorless hair. This peach-fuzz hair makes the scalp look thinner, and over time, the miniaturized hair follicles atrophy and die, causing permanent hair loss known as balding. There is no peach-fuzz hair in balding areas, and the scalp appears tight and shiny.
Baldness is an unalterable condition. Once the hair follicle has atrophied, it is gone forever. This would be similar to losing any other body part, and since we are not able to reproduce our body parts, there are no female hair loss products or remedies that can force the body to produce a new hair follicle.
Causes of Female Pattern Hair Loss
Women, just like men, inherit the gene for thinning hair from either parent. In women, testosterone is produced in the adrenal glands and the ovaries. Although testosterone gets converted to DHT in a womans body, it cannot cause female hair loss due to the protective effects of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones reduce DHT production and block DHTs attachment to the hair follicle as long as they are present in adequate amounts. Any condition that can cause a decreased production of estrogen and progesterone or overproduction of DHT can cause thinning hair in genetically predisposed women. In women, hair loss can start at any age after puberty, but in most cases it occurs with menopause. The normal production of female hormones drops drastically during menopause, lowering a womans natural protection against thinning hair.
Hair loss in pre-menopausal women indicates an abnormal hormonal imbalance that requires medical investigation and appropriate treatment.
In post-menopausal women, hormone replacement therapy restores the normal hormonal levels and stops the process. In cases where hormonal replacement therapy is not recommended, the only other available medical option is Rogaine 2%. Although Rogaine activates the follicles growth phase, it has no effect on the DHT production that eventually leads to hair-follicle atrophy.
